Ling Cai

Ling Cai works on temporal knowledge graphs, qualitative reasoning and inference, points of interest recommendation, geographic information retrieval, urban computing, cognitive science and Semantic Web. Recently, Ling has been particularly interested in the representation of and reasoning about knowledge in representation learning.

By comparing different ways of representing knowledge in symbolic AI (e.g., knowledge graphs) and sub-symbolic AI (e.g., graph embedding methods), Ling studies what the outcomes of such differences are, and how machines and humans could be mutually beneficial to achieve real AI for knowledge inference and reasoning.

Before joining UCSB, Ling obtained her B.S. degree from Wuhan University and M.S. degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 2020 to 2022, Ling worked at the Center for Spatial Studies on the KnowWheregraph project.
