Department of Geography
Jeff Howarth (Ph.D. Geography, UC Santa Barbara) is a visiting scholar from the Department of Geography at Middlebury College in Vermont. His primary research interests concern (1) how students learn to use geographic information systems and other software to solve problems and design maps and (2) how the design of instruction influences this learning.
While at UCSB, Howarth with be working on cognitive load theory, multimedia learning, and problem-based learning of GIS with Rich Mayer and Mary Hegarty. Howarth will be examining how differences in the problem spaces of spatial analysis and cartographic design can influence leaning, and review evidence-based principles of problem design and multimedia design for GIS instructors. He will also develop methods to study how students use and learn from multimedia modules that are used in “flipped classrooms” and “blended learning” environments that he will employ when he returns to Middlebury.
