Federica Burini (Ph.D. Geography of Development, University of Bergamo, Italy) is a visiting scholar from the Department of Languages, Foreign Literatures and Communication of the University of Bergamo, where she is also member of the Diathesis Cartographic Lab (www.unibg.it/diathesis). She is Assistant Professor of Geography and she teaches Human Geography, Geography for Education, and Territorial Studies. Her primary research interests are in the area of participatory and collaborative mapping in rural and urban contexts, where she focuses both on methodological approaches and on Open and Wiki Geographic Information Systems for activating collaborative processes in territorial planning. Her research moves from rural areas of Subsaharan Africa (especially Benin, Burkina Faso, and Niger) to European rural and urban areas (especially the Lombardy Region in Italy).
While at UCSB, Federica Burini will be hosted by Keith Clarke and will explore the VGI and collaborative mapping systems used for urban planning in some U.S. cities.
